About Us

Our History

Blackthorn Good Neighbours is a registered charity and company limited by Guarantee.

We are set up to work in partnership with local people and others to empower individuals, develop opportunities and operate services that will have a positive impact on peoples' lives, and will contribute to making their communities better places to live. 

BGN was set up in 1998 to support and bring together the community on Blackthorn estate and surrounding estates in Northampton East

Blackthorn Good Neighbours (BGN) is a registered charity which has been working in the neighbourhood since 1998. It has worked in many forms to provide provisions for the neighbourhood and has helped to retain a sense of community within the area. 

BGN's main activities today are:

Running Blackthorn Community Centre which is used by Northamptonshire County Council  monday to friday 9-5 to run a Children Centre and used in the evenings and weekends by local groups such as 2 youth groups on a monday evening, Rainbows on a tuesday and a variety of other uses. The centre is also available for hire for events, parties etc

The BGN Family Centre and Nursery  opened in January 2015 offering nursery provision to 2 3 and 4 year olds,and a breakfast club, alongside meetings rooms and a variety of groups for local people to attend eg craft group,coffee and chat.

BGN is the locally trusted organisation for Growing Together a £1 million resident led programme of community investment. This is funded by the Big Lottery Fund as part of their Big Local Programme 


Community Development

Community Development
Peter is the Programme Co-ordinator for Growing Together, and has taken on the role of supporting the community to draw up a plan for the area. The Big Lottery has £1 million to help the areas of Lumbertubs, Lings, Goldings, Blackthorn and Overstone Lodge. Peter is working with local residents to build on how this can happen.

Chloe is the Community Development Worker and works across the Growing Together area supporting volunteers and helping to organise events.

Ann Gilbert- Chair
Ann Gilbert has 25 years experience working in the voluntary/community sector. As the Chief Executive of an organisation providing support to frontline groups and volunteers, she gained a wide understanding of the full range of issues facing the voluntary sector in particular strategic planning.

Ann is now an independent consultant in voluntary sector issues; she is a trained facilitator and trainer with a particular expertise in the involvement of volunteers.

She has an MA in Community Education and sits on the Board of Minster General Housing Association and the Governing Council of the University of Northampton.

Catherine Whiting- Trustee
Catherine has spent more than fifteen years working in communications, including change management, PR, branding, internal communications and employee engagement. During that time she has worked for organisations in the corporate, public and voluntary sectors, including Marconi, Easynet, The Refugee Council and most recently The Open University. Currently specialising in strategic communications, Catherine works with senior internal and external stakeholders to advise on integrated communications solutions to complex organisational requirements, managing risk and building reputation. She lives in Northampton with her husband and daughter.

Jenny Carter- Trustee
Jenny has been a member of the Blackthorn Good Neighbours Board since 2008. She has nearly twenty years experience of working in the voluntary sector in Northamptonshire.

Lewis Bevan- Trustee
Lewis retired in 2012 after more than 40 years in the UK Civil Service. For much of that time he was an elected lay representative of his trade union, responsible for negotiations at a national level and taking responsibility for IT developments and personnel policies.

Melanie Jones- Trustee
Melanie volunteered and now works for Welfare Rights Advice Service since 1995. This has now been re-named Community Law Service, in which she specialises in Welfare benefits. She mainly deals with social security, local authority and HMRC disputes on behalf of clients and advocate in tribunal and county court hearings and until recently, debt counselling. She has undertaken several outreach projects, her current project is now based in Corby and Kettering where she delivers both an appointment session, home visits and attend other organisations to give talks. She lives with her long-term partner and two adult children.

Pamela Harrison- Trustee
Pamela Harrison has 25 years of experience of working in the voluntary sector. She began by facilitating weekly support groups for young parents and eventually managed the YWCA Young Women's Centre in Northampton. She provided support for the development of YWCA Centres in the East Midlands and finally was Assistant Director of YWCA of Great Britain responsible for strategic services. 
Pamela brings skills and qualifications in community involvement and individual participation, the development of services to meet specific needs, quality assurance and service evaluation.

Ruth Light- Trustee
Ruth has worked in the voluntary sector for 14 years and has worked for both national and local Charities. Ruth spent 6 years providing support to voluntary and community sector groups within Northampton and for the past 2 ½ years has worked as the Coventry Local Involvement Network project manager working with volunteers and local people to make improvement to health and social care.
